WOMEN'S ROSTER
May 31, 2017 - Head coach Sandro Fiorino has named a 12-player squad for the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games to be held in the Bahamas.
The squad features four returning players from the 2016 U18 European Championships in Vichy, France, in Khadija Brouillette, Sophie de Goede, Tausani Levale and Denise Roy. Canada claimed bronze at the tournament.
“The returning players from France last summer will provide leadership and experience,” Fiorino said. “Ten of the players selected recently played in the Tropical Sevens so this group is learning how to play together at International events.”
At the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games in Apia, Samoa, Canada collected a silver medal in rugby’s first ever inclusion in the games. Canada recently cruised to the gold medal at the Tropical Sevens in Florida.
“The goal is to give these players a taste of what high performance rugby is all about and play at a multi-sport event like the Youth Commonwealth Games,” Fiorino said.
Canada’s U18 sevens program has produced a number of graduates into the senior setup as current Canadian standouts Caroline Crossley, Hannah Darling and Charity Williams all represented Canada at the age-grade level before finding success on the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.
Streaming details, as well as pools and kickoff times, will be announced in the coming weeks.
